Newspapers By Mail

Sir, —I greaitly sympathise with “W.J.D.’s” dissatisfaction over the unwarranted delays in tihe delivery of newspapers and journals. My experience seems to be worse than his. Today, I received the issue of a weekly journal posted in London on June 19—an interval of more than 11 weeks. Three subsequent issues arrived before it Deliveries have been particularly bad during the last few months. The “explanation” offered by the Chief Postmaster, Christchurch. is not very clear. If it means anything, it is that certain second-class mail which reached Wellington before August 15 was not delivered to addresses in Christchurch until the first week in September. One is entitled to draw the inference that there is either gross incompetence or plain neglect of responsibility to the public somewhere in the New Zealand Poet Office.—Yours, etc L.S. September 9, 1963. [The Chief Postmaster, Christchurch (Mr C. J. C. Simpson) said: “During the period August 15 to 19, 900 bags of overseas mail were received in Christchurch. These included newspaper postings made in England from June 16 to July 12. Although the earliest-dated mail was not received in one consignment, all three dispatches were cleared for delivery by the end of August. Deliveries should have been completed by September 2. I will be pleased to have an investigation made into the further delay mentioned by the correspondent if he will let me have details.”]
