Matthews Schemes Spurs Defeat

(N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, August 25. The newly-promoted Stoke City, with the 48-year-old former England right-wing, Stanley Matthews, as elusive as ever, scored a shock 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspurs when the English soccer season began on Saturday.

The England centre-for-ward, Bobby Smith, put Tottenham ahead after two minutes, but Jim Mcllroy equalised 15 minutes later, and scored a second just before half-time.

Arsenal’s £62,000 midweek signing from Dundee, lan Ure, rated the best centre half in Britain, was on the losing side in his first game when Wolverhampton beat Arsenal 3-1. Manchester United, the F.A. Cup holder, drew, 3-3, away to Sheffield Wednesday, after trailing, 1-2, at half-time. Everton Scores Three

The League ChampionEverton, with its sights set on the triple prize of the European Cup, the F.A. Cup and the First Division title, began with a 3-0 win over Fulham. Derek Temple and Alex Scott netted for Everton, and the Fulham goalkeeper, Tony Macedo, put the ball into his own goal.

Sunderland, which missed promotion to the First Division on goal average, beat Huddersfield, 2-0, with goals by Andy Kerr and George Mulhall. Middlesbrough, another team fancied to challenge strongly in Division Two, crushed Plymouth, 5-0. Three of the teams which moved up into the Third Division started off in winning vein. Brentford beat Notts County. 4-1; Oldham got the better of Queen’s Park Rangers, 2-1, and in a clash between promoted teams. Mansfield won, 2-1, at Crewe. The freak goal of the day was scored by the Welsh international. John Charles, playing his first League game for Cardiff City in Division Two, after being transferred from the Italian club, Roma, at a fee of £20,000. Charles netted with a kick from 10 yards inside his own half which bounced over the head of the advancing Norwich City goalkeeper.
