Reluctant For Freedom

The Colonial Secretary, Mr Duncan Sandy's, has invited representaiives of Fiji to London to discuss a constitution for the Colony, according to the “Daily Telegraph." The constitutton would preserve a continuing link with Britain.

The conference might be held next year, the newspaper said.

The Fijians, unlike most other Colonial peoples, do not want independence. It appeared they were going to make sure they did not get it, the news>>aper said.

Earlier this year, they sent a letter to the Colonial office saying they must have an assurance about the long-term future of the Colony before agreeing to steps which would give them greater selfgovernment.
