VAN HITS BRIDGE

Man Killed At Kaikoura A man was killed at 7.15 p.m. on Saturday when the light service van he was driving struck a concrete abutment on the Stoney creek bridge, two miles south of Kaikoura. He was Kenneth William Bannister, aged 44, married with one child, of 323 Greers road, Ctiristchurch. Mr Bannister was travelling south on the main highway when his vehicle struck the bridge. The impact damaged the van extensively, driving the engine back into the passenger compartment and killing the driver instantly. An inquest was opened for identification in the Kaikoura Coroner’s Court before Mr H. J. Hayward, J.P. Evidence of identification was given by George Maxwell Roberts, Mr Bannister's employer.
