Change In Process At Glassworks
(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, August 16. The Whangarei glassworks is to be opened again in about nine months after at least £500,000 is spent on converting the plant from the Foucault to the Pittsburgh process.
This was announced by Pilkington Brothers, Ltd., and Australian Consolidated Industries, Ltd., today in Whangarei. The change in process was described as essential to ensure supplies of glass would be of a quality comparable with that of imported glass Work on the factory modifications is now being planned.
In the terms of agreement covering the sale of the former McKendrick Glass Company plant to the two companies, it was not intended to switch to the Pittsburgh process for three or tour years. However, if the original timetable had been adhered to, the Pittsburgh plant might not have been installed at Whangarei.
