Youth Prison Site
Sir,—l see it is some Palmerston North clergymen who are dictating Where the prison site should be. I am a religious person myself but I do think there are far too many “religious pressure groups” in the welfare state. It seems to me the prisons are being pushed on to the community whether they like it or not. Surely it is up to the prisoner to rehabilitate himself; the individual is responsible for his own actions. We are answerable to God only for our own actions, not the other fellow’s. Why don’t the clergymen pint the blame where it belongs—on the weirflare state. I maintain prisoners are the responsibility of the prison staff. I bear no grudge against prisoners in general, but it seems to me pushing them on to the community is wrong.—Yours, etc., E.N. July 24, 1963.
