TRITONICA WRECK
30 Feared Dead (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) QUEBEC. July 21. A fleet of small boats searched the St. Lawrence river east of Quebec today for victims of the ship collision yesterday.
Some authorities said the death toll might exceed 30. An- inquest was being held today to identify the bodies of 18 seamen killed when the 13.000-ton British ore-carrier, Tritonica, sank witjiin minutes after being in collision with another vessel. The Tritonica went down quickly in 64ft of water, near the icentre of the main shipping channel. A marker has been placed at the scene and other shipping has been warned to steer clear of the sunken ship.
The river at that part is about 18 miles wide. The collision was the most serious in the St. Lawrence river system in half a century. It happened shortly before 3 am. in fog.
