South Brighton Wins Cup

South Brighton County Women’s Institute won the C.W.I. Dominion programme trophy for 1962-63, it was announced at the Dominion Federation Biennial Council meeting held at Blenheim recently. Organised by a sub-commit-tee consisting of Mesdames W. A. Hodgkinson (convener), W. J. McDowell (secretary), J. Beumelberg, W. K. Ogden, L. Chamberlain, A. Gould and M. Milligan, the winning programme was based on the theme “Countries Of the World.” Programmes were judged by Mrs J. W. Martin, vice-president of the Dominion federation. Beginning last May, the programme opened with a pageant of nations carried out in song, prose and sketches.

Talks, films and displays and competitions were devoted to Australia, Holland, Japan, America, China and other countries in other months.

South Brighton’s success marks the third time the institute has been placed in the programme competition In 1900-61 they were first, using the New Brighton centennial as their theme, and in 1961-62 they were placed second, with a programme based on famous New Zealand women.
