Japanese At Celebrations

Miss !tsu Suzaki, an executive member of the Japanese Girl Guide movement, will be a guest at the New Zealand Girl Guides’ Association’s fortieth anniversary celebrations next month.

During the anniversary festival week, to be held in Christchurch from August 27 to SI, Miss Suzaki will demonstrate Japanese handcrafts She is to be in the Dominion about two months, studying guiding methods. New Zealand guides have been preparing for their “ruby year” festival for several months, raising their fares and holding handcraft competitions. About 1200 guides and adult leaders from all parts of the country are coming to Christchurch, where they will stay in school hostels and classrooms, university hostels, motor camps, boarding houses and private homes. The festival will also be attended by 2000 Christchurch guides. Several city halls have been hired for festival week activities, as no one hall was large enough. Highlights of the festival will be a handcraft exhibition when winning entries from provincial competitions will be judged. Prizes will be presented by the Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard) at a concert to be held in the Civic Theatre on August 28.
