RANGIRIRI FLOODING

River Level Dropping (N.Z. Press Association) ■ HAMILTON, July 22. The broker* stopbank at Rangiriri could possibly be repaired towards the end bf the week if there was no more rain, a spokesman for the Waikato Valley Authority said today. Water was still pouring through the 40-yard gap this morning, but the river level at Rangiriri had dropped one foot to 118.5 ft from Thursday’s peak level, which breached the old stopbank. River levels were generally dropping this morning. A drop of 2.lft was recorded at Huntly, but the river there is still 2.5 ft above normal.

Rangiriri farmers, some of whom are resigned to the prospect of having parts of their properties under water for the next few months, are meeting today. About 1500 acres are under water.

Stopbank works below the Rangiriri bridge are on next year’s Waikato Valley Authority programme of works.
