EYE CHECKS FOR ADULTS
Moves Against Blindness (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 22. A regular ophthalmic check for every person in New Zealand over 45 was essential as a measure toward preventing blindness, said the assistant director of the Foundation for the Blind (Mr J. E. May) today. Mr May was addressing the Rotary Club of Wellington on definitions of blindness. Approximately 95 to 99 per cent, of New Zealanders accepted regular dental inspections but how many people of more than 45 went to an eye specialist for a regular eye check? he asked. There were diseases of the eye which showed up after that age.
“If we can get that check we shall save a substantial percentage of blindness in this age group.’’ Mr May said.
A person could have the disease of glaucoma tor months, even years without being aware of it When they did become aware of it aU that could be done was save the remaining areas of the field of vision. Glaucoma affected adults throughout the world and was prevalent in New Zealand.
