PENSIONERS’ COTTAGES

Approved At Lyttelton

The. erection of pensioners' cottages in Lyttelton was approved by the Lyttelton Borough Council at its meeting last night. It adopted a report from its health and sanitation committee that the council make application to the Department of Health for subsidies available for pensioners’ housing. Cr. N. D. Walker said there had been about a dozen applications for pensioners’ cottages. The council would be entitled to 50 per cent, subsidy of the total cost, including architect’s fees and the sites. A very favourable Government loan at a very low interest rate would also be obtainable. Cr. R. H. Duff said that because the pensioners’ cottages would involve the council in some thousands of pounds costs more details of expenditure involved should be made available to the council before approval Some evidence was also necessary of the need for pensioners’ cottages in Lyttelton. Cr. Duff said he would like to know what the exact cost of the pensioners’ cottages would be. and what rental it was proposed to charge. The report was adopted on a show of hands by 5 votes to 1.
