No Payment For Councillors

Lyttelton Borough councillors would not be paid for their services, a meeting of the council decided last might. Putting the motion, Cr. R. H. Duff said he had a great deal of difficulty in coming to this conclusion himself. Cr. W. Dodds, seconding the motion, said he was in favour of payment to councillors. But he did not think the council was in a position to grant payments. Cr. N, D. Parratt said that the council had a great deal of expenses, such as pensioners’ cottages, new toilets, and harbourside improvements. Because of this, the councillors should continue to give their services free, as they had in the past.
