LOCAL BODY STAFF
Protection Of Interests
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 2.
A bill designed to protect the interests of people on the permanent staff of local bodies affected by amalgamation will be introduced to the next session of Parliament by the Minister of. Internal Affairs iSir Leon Gotz). The bill. Sir Leon Gotz said in Auckland today, would ensure that such employees had adequate time to find other suitable employment or alternatively that they were paid compensation. The matter had been under discus-.on in the Cabinet ever since representations had been made to it by bite Local Bodies Employees’ Union two years ago. Sir Leon Gotz said The legislative committee of the Cabinet had approved the drafting of the bill and this was now being done.
Sir Leon Gotz said town and county clerks were not members of that union, but their interests obviously had to be protected in the bill, too. “If six local bodies amalgamate,” he said, "the six clerks cannot all be top men in the new organisation. Some might be absorbed, but a reduction in staff would be inevitable.
“People who made a career of local body staff work.” he said, “are entitled to the sameprotection as civil servants."
