Scheme To Provide Dogs For Blind

DUNEDIN, June 2 A proposal that the formation of an association to provide guide dogs for the blind be the national service scheme of Round Table New Zealand, was unanimously approved at the Round Table convention in Dunedin on Saturday afternoon Initially, a four-man committee was established, three members of which are Round Table representatives and the fourth. Mr P Sandwavs an Auckland guide dog owner and user This committee will endeavour to set up an interim committee representative of the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind, Dominion Association for the Blind kennel clubs, local digna taries. and others to make nine members.
This permanent committee will work in conjunction with the Association of Guide Dogs for the Blind of Australia which will train the dogs at its Melbourne centre and also teach owners in the use of the dogs Representing the Australian association at the convention was Mr F T Beau-
champ, who replied to delegates’ questions, and said there was need for blind people io have the opportunity to gain the independence they -sought Applications from blind people who want a dog will be received and considered and those successful will be provided with a dog. free of charge As intending owners will have to go to Melbourne for a month's instruction course arrangements for travel will have to be made by the committee in New Zealand and travelling expenses paid The raising and training of a dog will cost about £6OO inclusive of shipping charges ’to New Zealand from Australia. and the necessary finance wil] be raised through expected public support. The scheme originated in the North Shore club, where a sub-committee was set up to explore the possibilities of practicably bringing the scheme into operation. All Round Tables, whether chartered or unchartered, will give £lO towards the cost of initial publicity The association will probably be centred in Auckland. z
