Tomato Juice For Mecca

(N .£ Press Association)

NELSON. June 2

The manifest of a ship sailing from an Australian port disclosed that many thousands of cases of tomato Juice were being exported to Mecca said Mr P. N. Holloway, a former Minister of Industries and Commerce, in Nelson today.

“Why they went it, I don't know, but clearly they do Yet if 1 suggested to someone in New Zeeland that we could sell tomato juice in Mecca, I would be thought to be a crank,” he said. The manifest also showed hundreds of thousands of eases of meat-loaf being exported from Australia to the Middle East, together with

rnany other odd items, even including' dog-food

Mr Holloway was discussing lines of industrial development in New Zealand He said an idea had developed that a person who advocated the development of New Zealand industry af a faster pace was against agriculture Nothing could be further from the truth—agriculture and manufacturing went hand in hand

Mr Holloway said the object of expanding industry in New Zealand was not that of giving an increasing population work to do: it was to produce goods. Neither was the drive to expand industry and exports aimed at replacing existing exports of meat, wool and dairy products. The object was to give the country “the little bit extra that makes all the difference." ■ Mr Holloway was speaking

at a Labour representation school in Nelson. •

The Leader of the Opposition iMr Nordmeyer), who also addressed the school, said he had heard suggestions there would be tax concessions this year. Any concessions made, ne said, should be in the direction that would ensure the greatest justice to the community as a whole and he suggested the best way was in the direction that would ensure the greatest justice to '.he community as a whole and he suggested the best way was in the direction that Labour indicated—an increase from £9 to £lO a week in the personal exemptions of single persons and from £l2 to £l5 for married persons That would mean, he said the greet mass of wageearners would not have need of paying income tax at all.
