MR H. MURPHY

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 2. Mr Harold Murphy, president of She Wellington Trotting Club and a life member of the Wellington Rugby Football Union, collapsed and died at Athletic Park yesterday afternoon. He was 73. ■ Mr Murphy, a member of the Wellington Trotting Club since the 1920's and a committeeman since 1943. was a prominent advocate of night trotting. Good horses he raced in recent years included Lileas. Harlequin Parade, and Quinharold. He was also a galloping enthusiast and a member of the Wellington Racing Club. A senior footballer in his youth, Mr Murphy served for some years on the executive of the Wellington Rugby Football Union. He was also a member of the Wellington Bowling Club. He was a director of Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Company (Wellington). Ltd., but retired from active participation in the business some years ago. Mr Murphy is survived by his wife and three daughters CAPT. H. LYON (N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS HILL (Maine). May 31. Captain Henry Lyon, jun., the navigator who guided the Australian aviator, Charles Kingsford-Smith on the historic first trans-Paciflc flight died yesterday, aged 78. He was a mariner who had never flown before he made that pioneer flight on May 31. 1928—35 years ago today He was the only one of the four-man crew of KingsfordSmith's plane, the Southern Cross, who did not meet a violent death. Captain Lyon was one of wo Americans aboard rhe Southern Cross. The other was the radio operator, James Warner Tne son of an admiral, Captain Lyon ran away from naval college at 20 to go to sea in a sailing ship. Within a few years he won his master mariner’s ticket and in ♦he First World War commanded a navy transport In the Second World War he "ommanded a freighter. Mr B. Van Staveren (N.Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 2. Mr Barend Van Staveren managing-director of Van Staveren Bros.. Ltd has died in Auckland, aged 81 Born and educated in Wei,'ingtcin, Mr Van Staveren founded the company. wi*h two of his brothers, in 1905 Later branches of the firm were opened Ln Auckland Christchurch and Dunedin Mr Van Staveren was a foundation member of the Wellington Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association. He was a member of bowling clubs in both Auckland and Wellington Foe several years he was president of the Wellington Hebrew congregation. Mr Van Staveren is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
