STAND UNSAFE
Permit Refused At Waimate
The public stand at the Waimate racecourse is unsafe. A permit for its use this year has been refused by the Waimate Borough Council, it was disclosed at the annual meeting of the Waimate Trotting Club.
The stand was not used at the Waimate Racing Club’s annual meeting last Sator’day. The stand would not be relicensed unless certified by an architect, and in its present condition that was not forthcoming, said Mr M. J Leonard, the secretary of the trotting club. The architect’s opinion was that the stand, “in a wind, with a good crowd on top might collapse,” Mr Leonard said. “The stand has a serious lean and you could put your finger through some of the uprights.” It had been suggested that the money needed to make the stand safe would be better devoted to a new stand, he said.
The racecourse’s join*, grounds committee had asked the clubs to appoint representatives to a committee which would consider ways of providing a new stand or making the old stand sate, he said.
The building serves a double purpose: the top part is used as a grandstand and the ground floor is a tea room.
Mr C. E. Leighton said the building could be urtd as a tea room for many years.
