Charges May Be Imposed

NEW PLYMOUTH, May 31 The police had the power to impose a charge for costs on persons who had to be rescued by a search and rescue operation. Mr R. Syme told the annual meeting of the Taranaki Associated Mountain Clubs in Stratford As the law stood now. said Mr Syme, the police had power to exact charges The Federated Mountain Clubs rejected the idea of having the law changed with the right of the person concerned to have his or her side of the case heard

Mr Syme added that the system of getting expenses paid to members of the search operation had been speeded up and the police were doing their best to see there were no undue delays Member clubs were called out for search and rescue operations five times during the year ended January 31. said the di airman, Mr D H Rawson. Two of the calls were for people in trouble m the bush away from Mount Egmont. one was- for a solo climber who disregarded advice on the Stratford side of Egmont, one involved a girl injured at North Egmont and one concerned a boy who had a fatal accident on the south side.
