WAGGONS DIRTY
West Coast Complaint
(From Our Own Reporter)
WESTPORT, May 31. A strong protest to the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) on the continued use of uncleaned stock waggons on the West Coast-Christchurch system is to be made by the West Coast provincial of Federated Farmers.
The annual meeting of the provincial at Westport today was gi-ven several examples of waggons being used with no attempt having been made to clean them of droppings. A letter was received from the traffic manager at Christchurch stating that there was a procedure for cleaning such trucks and every effort was made to send clean ones to the West Coast, but in rush periods that was not always possible. Mr N. A. Lines (Inangahua) said he had been consigning stock for 32 years and had only seen one really clean waggon in that time. Another member said that the dirt was even a foot deep at times.
Mr E, T. O’Connor (Westport) said that when farmers were so concerned with the spread of tuberculosis, stock couid become infected when carried in such dirty conditions.
Members said it was felt that little trouble would result from a more regular system of cleaning the waggons.
