New Zealanders will be able soon to talk with friends in the United States using a direct-dialling telephone system

Announcing this today, the Post Office said the service will be introduced m December this year when the United States communication network will be linked into the newly-completed Compac cable joining Australia, New Zeeland, Fiji. Canada and Britain-

Work on the Compac cable project is proceeding according to schedule and the cable ships. Mercury and Retriever, are at present laying the final section between Suva and Vancouver.
