Tennis EMERSON IN SEMI-FINAL
Two Sets Down To Sangster (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) ROME, May 12. The No. 1 seed. R. Emerson (Australia) reached the semifinals of the Italian lawn tennis championships by beating M. J. Sangster (Britain) yesterday. Emerson won 4-6. 4-6 6-4. 6-4. 6- but not before Sangster had been two sets up and leading by two games to one and 40idve on his service in the third set. Emerson fought back magnificently, squared at 2-2. and went on to take the set 6-4. He came back strongly after the interval to win the next two sets for the loss of four games. It was the fourth time the two had met. Emerson has won on each occasion, although Sangster has now taken him to five sets three times. Emerson is seeking the "grand slam" this year—the Australian. French. Wimbledon, and United States titles—but he will have to Improve on yesterday’s form to do it. At no stage did he look like the world's No. 1 amateur. Sangster's big service was toe Englishman s chief weapon, and he served numerous aces. Emerson’s return of service was often weak, but it improved as the match progressed. Results in the quarter-finals of the women's Singles were. Miss Smith (Australia) beat Miss Ebbem (Australia), 6-1. 7- Miss L. Turner (Australia) beat Miss J. Alvarez (United States). 6-4. 6-1; Mis* J. Lehane (Australia) beat Miss C. Truman (Britain). 6-4. 6-1. Mrs A. Hay-don-Jones (Britain) beat Miss V. Sukova (Czechoslovakia), 6-4,
