IMPORTS CHANGE

Grouping Of Licences Pres* Association) WELLINGTON, May 7. Additional flexibility in the use of import licences was announced yesterday by the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton). He -recalled that when the 1963-64 import schedule was released last March he had said a scheme for the grouping of import licences was being prepared. This had now been completed and details would be available, from local customhouses tomorrow. About 140 items in the schedule had been placed in 14 groups, he Skid.

..A licence holder, with a 1963-64 licence for one or more of the items in a group might now use 25 per cent, of those licences to import any of the other items in the group, Mr Shelton said. This new procedure, together with the manufacturers’ general entitlement scheme and the grouping already done when the schedule was issued, represented a sincere endeavour by the Government to allow licence holders more freedom in the use of licences, he said. At the same time, the Government in accordance with its announced policy must ensure that payments for imports were kept within the £250 million provided. “I am sure that in this coming licence period we have gone a long way to helping the commercial community overcome some of the restrictiveness of past import schedules.’’
