LICENSING OF TRANSPORT

Nelson Applications Granted An application by R. A. McLennan, Ltd., of Stoke (Mr M. W. Wisheart), for two restricted vehicle authorities to be amended to allow the carriage of general goods has been granted by the No. 9 Transport Licencing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood) in a reserved decision. An application for the extension of two authorities to include the No. 9 district for the carriage of tar and bituminous materials was also granted, with exemption from the 40-mile rail restriction for carriage of bulk tar between Christchurch and Achray, near Waiau. The first part of the application was opposed by the Nelson District Licensed Goods Operators’ Association and Transport (Nelson), Ltd (Mr H. W. Hunter), and the .second part of the application was opposed by Mr F. Daly, for the General Manager of Railways. The first part, concerning general goods, probably arose from the company’s purchase of a transport business domiciled at Blenheim, said the authority. Revenue had rapidly expanded, and in addition the company obtained a timber and sawmills supplies contract between Taka ka and Nelson. Evidence proved that one truck for this work was not sufficient. Further, the company had a limited amount of work for a new shipping company, the Sullivan Shipping Company, Ltd. “In the proposed grant I hold that the industry in the Nelson district can absorb the extended rights without the slightest danger to the objecting association and Transport (Nelson), Ltd.,” the authority said. Referring to part two of the application, the authority said there was evidence of a demand for road-sealing in the north and west of the Lewis Pass. “In the words of Mr McLennan for the company, ‘Long-distance cartage of bitumen polices itself The company is only asking for ability to tender in the No. 8 Transport District,’ ” the authority said.
