Outsider Wins Mile Classic

LONDON, May 2 Only for Life, a 33/1 outsider, won a photo finish for the 2000 Guineas, first of the season's big races, at Newmarket yesterday. The English colt just warded off a desperate challenge by the Irish colt, lonian, starting at 18/1, to win £32.000 by a short head. Corpora, from France, was third.

The Waimate Cup stake has been increased by £125 this year to £550, of which the winner's share will be £4OO. Altogether. the Waimate Racing Club will distribute £2585 in stakes at its meeting on May 25. including trophies worth £2OO.
