Wealthy Field In Te Rapa Event

"The Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND, May 2.

Between them the horses in the Founders Plate, the second leg of the double on the first day of the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday, have earned £129,385 15s.

Of the 10 acceptors for the £l5OO event two visiting gallopers, Picaroon and Key, are the biggest stake earners. Picaroon has won £26,567 10s and Key £16,150.

Picaroon’s best win was when he beat Great Sensation and Daysun in the £2500 Trentham Stakes, weight-for-age, at Trentham on January 23, 1961. He has also gained wins in 12 gold cups, including the £2OOO Hastings Gold Cup (twice) and the £l5OO Ormond Gold Cup (three times).

The £3OOO Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, one mile, at Riccarton on February 16 has been Key’s biggest win. Besides, she has taken the £2OOO Hawke’s Bay Cup, the £1750 North Island Challenge Stakes and the £2OOO Wellington Stakes. Waipari, with £15,430, is next on the list. Two Easter Handicaps, at Ellerslie, help to swell his total considerably. His total does not include a successful campaign in Australia, during which he took the A.J.C Metropolitan Handicap. The Cambridge galloper Woodlore has won £13.555 His best wins have been in the Nolan Handicap (twice) at Ellerslie.

Cabriere, a four-year-old gelding from Stratford, comes next with £12,333 ss. His biggest wins have been the £2OOO Great Northern Champagne Stakes (at Ellerslie) and the £ 1328 15s Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes.

Tatua heads Gitano by over £lOOO for seventh place. Tatua has won £11,815 and Gitano £10,419. Both have been successful in the £ 5000 Great Northern Derby at Ellerslie. As well, Tatua has taken the £1525 Great Northern St. Leger, the £2OOO Great Northern Champagne Stakes and the £lBOO Oliver Nicholson Handicap. Poet’s Pride’s biggest victory was in the £l5OO Suburban Handicap at Trentham earlier this season. His earnings total £7850. The three-year-old filly Noranda is well below her opponents. She has won £2385 in stake money, ■which includes the £2OOO Great Northern Oaks at Ellerslie this season. May Be Soft

The weather has become unsettled and there seems a chance that the going will be soft at Te Rapa on Saturday The first leg of the T.A.B double will be the Golden Mile.

Overdale is an unlikely starter in the Parana Handicap and Poet’s Pride will miss the Founders Plate if the track is very soft. Riding engagements includer W J. Mud ford: Neiita, Noranda.
