U.K. Reinforces Sarawak Units
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) SINGAPORE, April 16. British troops were flown to Sarawak over the week-end to reinforce military units in the colony, a British Army spokesman said in Singapore today.
The spokesman said one company of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry had been moved from Brunei to Kuching, and one company of No. 40 Royal Marine Commandoes had been flown from Singapore to destination.
The moves were a precautionary measure, he added.
Last week armed men wearing jungle green uniforms attacked a police station at Tebedu, a district of Sarawak close to the border with Indonesian Borneo, causing several casualties. A British Naval spokesman told Reuter that he was not authorised to comment on troop or naval movements in and around Singapore for the time being. Helicopters From Brunei
Six helicopters of Number 846 Squadron, Royal Naval Air Service, have arrived from Brunei in Kuching as a further precautionary measure after the incident at Tebedu.
The squadron, known as “Palmtree.” was formed during the revolt in Brunei at the end of last year. It is equipped with fast Belvedere
and Sycamore helicopters. The squadron has been operating in Brunei for the last few months. No further information on troop movements in the Borneo territories was disclosed.
