ASSAULTED GUARD

Man Fined £l5 (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON N„ April 14. “I have never seen so many convictions recorded against a man of your age,” said Mr L. Skinner, Justice of the Peace, in the Magistrate's Court at Palmerston North on Saturday when John Roach, aged 21, a brush-hand, of Wellington, appeared on a charge of having assaulted the guard on the Limited Express on Thursday night. Sergeant P. E. T. Pidgeon said Roach had been told twice to stop drinking on the train by the guard. On the second occasion, near Levin, Roach butted the guard on the face with his heed causing the guard's nose to bleed. At Palmerston North, Roach had made threatening remarks to the guard. Roach told the police he thought the guard wanted to confiscate his liquor. Mr Skinner, J.P.: Don't you know it's an offence to drink liquor on a train?—l didn’t know then, air. What have you got to say about this charge?—l had an argument with my in-laws in Wellington and went on the booze. I then decided to catch the train for Taihape. Look at these previous convictions. I have never seen so many convictions recorded against a man of your age. When are you going to settle down?—l am waiting for my Army papers to come through, sir.
