ROWING Canterbury Crews Win Triangular Contest

INVERCARGILL, March 31. Honours went to Canterbury crews which won two events and just failed by three lengths to win the third in the triangular eight* tournament between Canterbury. Otago and Southland, on the Oreti river, near Invercargill, on Saturday. This was Canterbury’s most successful triangular contest to date. The youth crew came in ahead at Otago by threequarters of a length, and the junior eights had an easy four lengths victory over Southland. In the junior event. Canterbury took a clear lead. From an initial striking rate of 41, the crew dropped slightly to row the bulk of the mile and a half course at 3S. Six members of this crew arc in the squad from which the Canterbury provincial crew to compete in the interprovincial tournament at Wellington. at Faster. will be selected.

in the youth eights. Canterbury had settled down by the halfmile mark. Striking 32. the crew increased its rating to 34 and gradually gained a slight lead, which it increased by the end of the race. In the senior eights. Otago got away to one of its characteristic quick starts and left the other two crews standing, nearly two lengths behind. Canterbury quickly recovered and set out to reduce Otago’s lead. with Southland tailing the field However. Otago had established a dominant position.
