HOUSES FOR COWS
Experiment In Shipping
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. March 27
On a voyage to New York. 12 Aberdeen Angus cows will travel in two specially-built houses—a new method in shipping cattle from New Zealand. The cattle are from a Palmerston North farm and are being shipped by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., in the freighter Paparoa The stock will be loaded aboard the ship in Auckland on Monday. The houses are modelled on United Kingdom agricultural plans. Each costs about £2OO, weighs three tons and contains 4000 super, feet of timber and malthoid roofing. The houses are 27ft long, 9ft wide and divided into six roomy stalls. In the past single pens have been used to ship New Zealand stock. A spokesman for the firm said shipping cattle in bulk meant better opportunities for watching and attending them. The Stalls were easier to clean. “When cattle are kept together they are much easier to handle.” he said.
