MERCY MISSION IN ANTARCTIC

Ships To Meet Today

The U.S.S. Glacidr has been battling against high winds, ice and snow in Antarctic waters for the last three days and nights to meet a Danish ship which has a critically ill seaman aboard.

The Glacier’s 1400-mile trip round the Antarctic coast is expected to end about 8 a.m. today when she is due to meet the Thala Dan, a Danish ship under charter to Australia, off Wilkes Station. The seaman, Mr E. Mortensen, aged 54, has been aboard the Nella Dan. but was transferred to the Thala Dan after it freed itself from ice on Saturday. The Thala Dan had been ice-bound for 12 days. The Glacier is expected to reach McMurdo Station at 8 a.m. oh March 3. Mr Mortensen will then be flown to Christchurch.
