Hitch-Hiking

Sir,—Though I have given a great many solicited and unsolicited lifts in my life I can appreciate the irritation of drivers who are constantly being asked for free transport At the same time, those who want to invoke the law in such a matter are really too silly to be taken seriously. Imagination is not the average motorist’s strong point, and your militant correspondents would almost certainly fail to recognise the difference between a pleasureseeking cadger for a ride and a person asking for their help as a matter of desperate urgency on behalf of someone gravely hurt or ill. If the law were to be called in to prevent such people from asking for lifts the results could well be tragic. No car is obliged to stop on demand, and the indignant motorist who wants the police to act on his behalf should be reminded of that stirring slogan, “Do it yourself.”— Yours, etc., CARACTACUS.
