N.Z.’s Diplomatic Service

Sir,—l find Mr R. S. Wheeler’s latest letter almost incompreheneible. He describes Sarawak, Brunei, and North Borneo as enclaves ot Indonesia—territories surrounded by foreign domination. Yet my atte shows that these three territories are situated midway between Indonesia, Malaya, Indo-Oiina and the Riilippines—(hey are no more enclaves of Indonesia than is Singapore or Eastern New Guinea. If they are to be transferred to todooesia by “commonsense diplomacy” for no

other reason than that she is a powerful and aggressive country, then let us not hesitate to transfer Australia. New Zealand. Eastern New Guinea. Singapore, Malaya, and the Philippines at the same time. Mr" Wheeler’s only defence of his proposed policy is that there would be no serious detriment to Commonwealth or British internets. This is not only false (Malaysia’s interests would definitely be adversely affected) but displays more narrow-mfadednesß on the part of Mr Wheeler than I had hitherto believed possible.—Yours. etc., W. D. SUTTON. Waunate. February 12, 1063 *
