NEW LECTURERS AT UNIVERSITY
Geologists Take Up Positions
Dr. A. E. Cockbain, formerly instructor in geological oceanography at the Institute of Oceanography, Vancouver, has arrived in Christchurch to become a lecturer in geology at Canterbury University. Dr. Cockbain joined the staff at the institute—a branch of the University of British Columbia —in 1960, after spending the previous two years with the Geological Survey on Cyprus. He gained his doctorate at Nottingham University. The highlight of his career, Dr. Cockbain said last evening, was his study of Foraninifera small, one-celled ocean animals with skeletons of calcium carbonate. “This group goes back some four or five hundred million years,” he said. Asked what attracted him to New Zealand. Dr. Cockbain said he wanted to “turn the year back to front,” and have a "warm, summery Christmas.” Dr. Cockbain is married, with two young children. Another geologist who has been appointed a lecturer in geology at the university is Mr S. MacDonald, who spent 12 years with the Geological Survey in Malaya. Mr MacDonald was born in Scotland and is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh. He is married, with two children.
