Big Jewel Theft

(N .Z JP.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, February 9

One of the famous Tiffany diamonds was among jewels worth at least 300,000 dollars reported stolen yesterday from the hotel suite of Mrs Irene Selznick. the former wife of the film producer, David O. Selznick.

The diamond, a perfect 20carat blue and white stone, is reported to be worth up to 150,000 dollars. Police sard Mrs Selznick found the jewels missing when she returned to her suite in the Hotel Pierre, on Central Park, soon after midnight. She listed 30 pieces of jewellery as missing, including necklaces, rings and pendants.

Mrs Selznick is the daughter of the late Louis B Mayer, and is a producer of stage shows and films. The robbery was the latest in a series of jewel thefts in the Central Park area in recent months.

The diamond was set in a ring. The jewels were taken from a drawer in the bedroom of Mrs Selznick’s tenth floor flat and the police said they suspected an “inside job” because there was no indication that anyone had broken in.
