STREET BRAWL IN AUCKLAND
Seven Convicted; Two Gaoled (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. February IL Convicting seven men after a brawl in Parnell, Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., said in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court: “The public are entitled to be protected from such events," A constable had been severely hurt and was not yet fit for duty, the Court was told. Arthur Samson, aged 26, a workman, was sent to prison for three months for resisting arrest and fighting in the street Samuel Samson, aged 28, a carpener, was gaoled for two months for assaulting the police and fighting, William Witana. aged 22, a forest hand, four months, and Dorsie Withers, aged 23, a mill hand, three months. Arthur and Samuel Samson, and Witana were convicted and discharged on charges of wilful damage For obstructing the police. James Barber, aged 22, a workman, was fined £2O and ordered to pay £1 10s costs. All these men pleaded not guilty. Moses Tane, a labourer, and Terry Barber, aged 17, a workman, who pleaded guilty to assaulting the police, were remanded in custody to February 15 for sentence.
