COLOMBO PLAN AWARDS

29 Students From

Malaya Twenty-nine Malayans will arrive in New Zealand in January and February under Colombo plan scholarships and training awards granted by the New Zealand Government

They include 22 candidates for university degrees and diplomas, two for teaching of the deaf, two for occupational therapy and one for physiotherapy. Two other awards are still under consideration.

The total number of scholarships and training awards allocated to the Federation of Malaya since the inception of the Colombo Plan is more than 200. To June, 1982. 17 New Zealand experts had been sent to the Federation —l2 land surveyors, one commercial broadcaster, one civil service administrator, and three educationists.

The value of New Zealand aid to Malaya under the Colombo Plan up to June, 1962, now amounts to £695,000. A little more than half this sum has been devoted to technical assistance (scholarships, training awards and the supply of experts) and the balance to capital aid (the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Malaya, a rural development project known as Kampong New Zealand and the Civil Service Training Centre).
