ALARM IN PITCAIRN

H-Tests By France (Special Crapdt. PITCAIRN ISLAND. January 10. News that France intends carrying out nuclear tests in the Gambia archipelago only 30C miles from Pitcairn has been received here with alarm. Grave fears are being felt for the safety of the population through radioactive contamination. When news of the proposed French tests first reached Pitcairn. an immediate appeal was made by the blenders to the British Government through Suva. They were told that the question was to be referred to the British Government for investigation. In the meantime the Handers are anxiously waiting lor instructions about what actions to toko lor their safety. No instructions have been received. The proposed site of the tests at Mangareva to only 300 miles from Pitcairn, while one of the islands of the Pitcairn group, to which the Islanders made periodic visits, is 50 miles closer.
