(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

MELBOURNE, December 12. Representatives of the major medical organisations in Victoria have made a statement urging adults to give up smoking themselves and to advise the young of the dangers in the smoking habit. The statement is made by a special medical committee , set up in Melbourne to con- ' sider findings made by the Royal College of Physicians I 'in London. A spokesman for the com- ! mittee said the whole of the medical profession in Victoria : was unanimous on the question. ' The committee's statement said: "Lung cancer is increasing in the community. It is ‘ proved that this disease is associated with the smoking ■ of cigarettes. “The more cigarettes 1 smoked, the greater is the : risk of death from lung ' cancer. “There is danger In the ' smoke of all cigarettes, filtered and unfiltered. “A heavy smoker who stops smoking lessens the risk of ' cancer developing. ' “The young should be ' warned of the danger and ' advised not to smoke. ‘‘Adults are urged to curb

the habit both for their own safety and as an example to the young. “This advice is supported by medical opinion throughout the world.”
