REFINERY PROJECT

Progress On Tanks <.V.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, Oct 17. Plates for the first and largest tank at the Marsden Point oil refinery are being laid by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, sub-contractors for the refinery tanks. The foundations have been finished for the crude oil tank, which will be 60 feet high and 160 feet in diameter, with a capacity of 34.000 cubic metres. The 48 tanks required range from 40 feet in diameter to this size, and are exnected to take a year to build. Largely local labour will be used and welders are being trained at a school established by the company in Whangarei.

A peak labour force of 120 men will be needed. Piling work on the oil jetty is continuing, but construction is complicated by a tide rip running up to seven knots and the tidal rise at the point.
