FREEZING CHARGES
Hawke’s Bay Figures Killing and freezing charges at freezing works in Canterbury, Otago, and Southland are still under consideration, it was reported in Christchurch yesterday. In the meantime. the Hawke's Bay Farmers’ Meat Company at Whakatu has reduced its charges on lamb for the new season by 5d to 5s 3d a carcase. Hates for hoggets, wethers, and ewes are unchanged from last year.
There have been increases in rates for frozen beef in quarters and chilled beef, but decreases for boneless beef. For quarter beef, the charge is 6s higher at 114 s a body for ox and heifer, and for chilled ox and heifer the rate is 6s higher at 94s a body. The boneless beef ox and cow rate is 4s lower at 1245.
Freezing charges are regarded as a balancing charge and where the charge for lambs has been slightly reduced in Hawke’s Bay this season, it is apparently expected that the increase in wage costs in the industry will be slightly more than offset by the value of byproducts recovered.
