August 28 A big increase in crimes ol violence and theft pushed the United States crime rate during the first half of this year 3 per cent, above the same period of 1961. The total of aggravated assault rose 6 per cent., murder 4 per cent., rape 3 per cent., car thefts 6 per cent., robbery and larceny of 5C dollars and over. 3 per cent, and burglary 1 per cent. Murders rose 38 per cent, in cities with a population between 500 000 and 750.000. Murder, aggravated assault, rape, and robbery increased 7 per cent, in cities with a population of more than 100.000.
