HIGH PRICES SOUGHT
U.S. Buyer Not Impressed
••The Press" Special Service MATAMATA. August 24.
The Californian trainer, E Presnell, has completed a tour of most North Island districts and has tried to buy several horses, but he said today: “The plane I came over on was not big enough—it could not carry enough money.’' The only definite sale so far is of the top-class sprinter D-Day, which should be an ideal type for American conditions.
It is unlikely that Presnell's trip will help to convince Americans that New Zealanders are keen to build a horse export trade to America. He asked one of the country’s leading breeders and bloodstock experts the value of one Waikato horse and was told the maximum would be 3000gns
“Well, they have told me 1 can look at him with a view to buying, provided the offer is in excess of 5000gns I guess they think all America.’ are millionaires.
“If they were, they would not stay that way long buying on that sort of market.'' Presnell commented.
The New Zealand expert said he was concerned at the price asked. He said: “We are trying to build an export market with America, but this sort of thing harms it. If they do not want to sell, why not say so? If they do, why ask a price over tw’ice what any New Zealand or Australian buyer would pay for the horse?” he asked.
