ESCAPING AMMONIA

Compressor Bursts

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. Aug. 13

An engineer narrowly escaped injury but a fireman was taken to hospital when ammonia escaped from a burst compressor in a Dunedin factory this afternoon. The fireman, B. Lind, suffered burns from the con. centrated ammonia He was treated at the Dunedin Public Hospital and discharged. The engineer, Mr P. G. Chandler, was standing only a few feet from the compressor in the works of Mackintosh Caley (N.Z.), Ltd., when it blew its head. The ammonia compressor is part of the refrigerating equipment. Four units of the Dunedin Fire Brigade rushed to the scene, and firemen wearing breathing apparatus, entered the compressor room with hoses to wash the air. They were unable to stay inside for more than a few seconds before the ammonia burnt their skin.
