Israelis In Lead
(N.ZP. A.-Reuter—Copyright) KERKRADE (Holland). August 13 The Israel Gadna Youth Orchestra of Tel Aviv took first place from the National Band of New Zealand in the world music contest early today. Playing before 4000 listeners in Kerkrade, the Israeli orchestra gained 538 out of a possible 540 point*, one point more than the New Zealand band, which won 537 earlier in the contest. Observers said it was unlikely that in the two days left for the contest any other band would wrest from the young Israelis the “Golden Lyre” challenge prize they were awarded by Queen Juliana in 1958 as the winners of that year’s Kerkrade contest. If they win it a third time the lyre is their’s for good.
