MONT BLANC TUNNEL
Big Blast To Complete IN Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyrigh t) MONT BLANC, Aug. 12. The road route from Paris to Rome will be cut by 137 miles on Tuesday by” the press of a button. The button will set off half a ton of T.N.T. under Europe's highest mountain. Mont Blanc (15,781 feet) to open the world's longest road tunnel. British United Press reported. The tunnel, 7} miles long, through the base of Mont Blanc will link Chamonix (France), and Entreves (Italy).
Italian miners completed their section of the tunnel on August 3. and today French miners, working from the other side, used a compressed air digging machine to cut a small hole through the remaining 21 feet of rock separating the two tunnelling teams. Tuesday’s blast will complete the link.
