LOADING TRIALS
Waggons Put In Ship (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 8. The vehicle deck of the new rail-road ferry, Aramoana, today took on the crowded appearance which will be familiar to thousands of New Zealanders in the years to come In the first full-scale trial rail-waggons rolled smoothly on to the ship and at one stage of the afternoon completely filled one side of the deck To the engineers and technicians. who have spent many months working on the loading plans, the afternoon was a satisfying one. They considered that the trial went well. The controller of the ferry (Mr S. G. Muir) said that one purpose of the test was to give the crew the opportunity of getting used to the equipment. Each four-wheeled waggon would be tied down with four specially designed chains while eight would be used for the eight-wheeled waggons All the tie-down equipment and deck fittings had been thoroughly tested for strain and had a big margin of safety, he said. The Aramoana will make its first commercial trip on August 13.
