UPPER ORARI BRIDGE

Tenders Being Considered

Tenders are being considered tor the completion of the new Upper Orari bridge, on the Rangitata-Geraldine road. The piles for the bridge have already been driven, and news is awaited of contracts let for the piers and supers.ructure.

The new bridge will replace the old wooden one-way bridge. which has been unsound in recent years. It was the scene of a fatal accident last winter, when a span was washed away in a flood, and a motorist plunged into the river to his death.

The new bridge will be 730 ft in length, and 12ft wide, with one passing bay. It will be of' prestressed concrete girders and reinforced-con-crete decking, with steel railing.

It will be one of several new concrete bridges built in South Canterbury in recent years. These include new bridges over the Opihi at Temuka (on the Main South road). Hanging Rock and Raincliff, over the Opuha at Skipton (on the GeraldineFairlie road), and over the Tengawai at Pleasant Point.
