U.S. FALLOUT SHELTER
State Servants And Convicts (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MAYVILLE (New York), July 30. Officials today announced that a 50,000 dollar fallout shelter, designed to hold about 40 convicts and about 120 Government and civil defence workers was nearing completion. Users would have .to have a special pass to get in, even in a disaster, United Press International said. The county civil defence director (Mr Robert Tanner) said private home shelters and proposed Federal Government shelters would take care of the general population. “As a means of last resort we’ve got machine-guns and other weapons that the sheriffs store in the shelter as part of their emergency duty arsenal," he said. Mr Tanner, asked whether he would shoot to prevent unauthorised persons from entering, said: “1 don’t think so. but. . . .” A 500 ft tunnel connects the shelter with the county gaol.
