BREAKAGES AT SCHOOL

Board Declines Liability Spectacles broken at school should not be a charge on school funds, the Aranui High School Board decided on Tuesday evening. It had received two applications for compensation, one for spectacles broken accidentally in a basketball match, and one for spectacles broken during an interval.

Mr D. H. Hemsley contended that the school should pgy. Parents of pupils at any school were vexed by the alimost-daily requests for replacement or repair of lost or damaged items used in class and clothing, he said. If spectacles were broken, he would consider that the last straw.

After a good deal of talk round the table, the chairman (Mr G. A Shouksmith) said the school could not insure itself against such events. If it accepted responsibility, it would be open to claims for broken teeth, other physical accidents, torn clothing, and other damage which must be accepted as an everyday risk.
